Given interacting on-line is an increasingly important part of our daily lives, there is a growing risk of your property being fraudulently sold or mortgaged by criminals.

There are two things you can do to help protect your property from being stolen from you or used as security if your property is already registered with the Land Registry:

Track changes to the register

You can sign up with the Land Registry to

receive property alerts, if someone is applying to the Land Registry to change the “register” of your property. For example, you would receive an alert if someone is trying to use your property for a mortgage.

This won’t automatically block any changes to the register, but it will alert you when something changes so that you can take urgent action. You can get alerts for up to 10 properties – there’s no fee.

Put a restriction on your title

You can stop the Land Registry registering a sale or mortgage on your property unless a conveyancer or solicitor certifies the application was actually made by you. You can do this by completing an online form here: https://www.gov.uk/protect-land-property-from-fraud
